In terms of the environment, Salmat -

• aims to perform at a level that complies with all environmental regulations;
• implements and maintains a structured environmental and waste management system, which we continually improve and review;
• encourages and equips employees to identify, then minimise, any adverse environmental impacts and issues;
• is prepared for emergencies and will lead the broader community in the event of an environmental emergency;
• continually improves efficiency when using resources such as energy, chemicals, water, packaging and wastes;
• reduces, reuses or recycles on-site wastes wherever possible, and ensures the safe disposal of wastes with minimal impact;
• expects and encourages our suppliers and contractors to meet the same high environmental standards as our own.

Salmat has established a formal environmental policy and procedure to establish a procedure for the protection and preservation of the environment through the implementation and utilisation of responsible operation & management practices.

Salmat has worked together with environmental consultants to ensure that we comply with relevant environmental legislation to establish a comprehensive environmental management framework.

The framework details all operational activities necessary to achieve compliance with environmental conditions, laws and standards.

An internal audit program is in place in order to successfully assess our processes for the regulatory audits by bodies such as:

Environmental Protection Authority - to determine whether licensing is required to emit gases into the atmosphere, has assessed Salmat branches. Where applicable, branches are licensed.

Water authorities - All branches have been assessed by the local water authority to determine whether they are required to have a trade waste permit to discharge wastes into the storm water drainage system. Where applicable, branches are licensed.

Salmat participates in a variety of Environmental and Community programs including:

Environmental Care: Salmat, wherever possible, uses recycled and or recyclable materials in its business. Salmat does not use or promote the use of chlorofluorocarbons and halons in the manufacture of its products and services.

Environmental Responsibility: Photocopiers, laser printers and other office copying equipment are located in an adequately ventilated area to facilitate safe removal of any dusts, gases or vapours.

Energy conservation: All equipment is both energy efficient and combined with our software and project management, becomes part of a value added solution. All lights are switched off when not in use or at the end of the day.

Hearing conservation: Sites undergo a bi-annual occupational noise survey. No equipment has recorded noise levels above 85dB. Employees are periodically monitored by undertaking audiometric testing. Ear plugs are provided for employee use.

Waste management program: Wherever possible, Salmat uses recycled and or recyclable materials in its business of providing imaging, printing and mailing solutions. Salmat recycles plastic, paper, CD/Microfiche, cardboard, pallets, oil, chemical waste and rags/cloths.
